Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Fleeting Expletives Case

Parents, Not Government, are Better at Monitoring Kids’ Television Habits
March 17, 2008

Charleston, SC – Today, the Supreme Court of the United States agreed to review a Second Circuit Court ruling regarding the FCC's indecency policy.

TV Watch Executive Director, Jim Dyke, issued the following statement:

“We trust that the highest court in the land will determine that the highest authority on family television viewing is parents and not the government.

Time and time again, parents have overwhelmingly indicated that they, and not government, should make programming choices for their families. Since 2000, all new televisions are equipped with the V-Chip. Over 85 percent of households currently subscribe to cable or satellite, providing parents access to additional blocking technologies. Entertainment programs are all rated. DVRs and DVDs allow parents to tailor viewing habits. And a majority of parents still monitor their children's media use. Americans reserve the right to make decisions over appropriate programming based on their own taste, values and style. It is a right solidified by parents' ability to control their children's viewing with information, technology and old fashioned rules.”

TV Watch was launched in May 2005 and is the leading national organization to promote parental controls and individual choices as an alternative to increased government regulation of TV content. TV Watch is a nonpartisan coalition of 29 individuals and organizations including legal and entertainment experts and political and consumer organizations representing more than 4.5 million Americans.
