TV Watch Statement on Government Threat to Live Sports Programming

July 12, 2006

Heads up sports fans: there’s a new ref in the game, and it may affect the way you watch your favorite sport.

This morning, a Hollywood Reporter story uncovered an unprecedented threat to sports programming: government investigations of live sports broadcasts. The investigations may have real consequences for sports fans who enjoy coverage that puts them in the racecar, on the sidelines or in the huddle.

Jim Dyke, Executive Director of TV Watch, says: “In trying to play TV nanny, the government is threatening our ability to experience the excitement and drama of live sports programming. Whether on the football field or in the cockpit of a racecar, American TV audiences want to be in on the action -- and they don’t want the government to interfere.”
